There is a second reason, and it is the one that matters more. Nobody knows where the setters will raise the bar next. A paper that is harder than it needs to be in every section costs you nothing if the exam stays where it is, and saves you if it moves.

This is the point on which we part company with most of the industry, and we would rather state it plainly than bury it.
A great deal of CLAT preparation is sold on legal knowledge. Principles to memorise. Landmark judgments to revise. Branches of law to cover. Legal current affairs to drill, week after week. It is easy to see why it is sold that way: a syllabus is far easier to sell than a reading habit. A syllabus has chapters, a schedule and a finish line. A reading habit has none of those and cannot be packaged.
The legal reasoning section does not test what the law is. It hands you a principle and asks you to apply that principle, exactly as stated, to a set of facts. The correct answer is the one that follows from the passage — not the one that follows from the law.
And the principle you are handed is almost never the whole rule. The setter chooses which elements to state and which to leave out. That choice is the question. A passage that lists the elements of defamation and says nothing about defences is not a badly written passage. It is a precisely written one, and it is waiting for you.
A candidate who has revised defamation knows there is a defence of truth. A candidate who has revised privacy law knows there are exemptions covering personal information. A candidate who has revised negligence knows about contributory fault. None of that is wrong. All of it is real law.
So when the facts land squarely in the gap the passage left, that candidate does not read the gap — they fill it. They supply the defence the passage never listed. The exception it never granted. The exemption they are entirely certain exists, because it does exist, just not in the passage in front of them. They then answer the law correctly and the question wrongly, and they do it with complete confidence, because they genuinely do know more law than the passage contains.
The candidate who knows nothing about defamation reads the passage, finds no defence in it, and marks the option the passage supports. They get it right. They get it right because they had nothing to import.
This is not a marginal effect and it does not run the way you would expect. In this section, applying legal knowledge you learned somewhere else brings your marks down. The more law you have drilled, the more options are available for you to import, and the more confidently you will pick one. Weeks of legal revision can leave you scoring below where you started.
We are not saying legal knowledge is worthless. Legal current affairs has a real place on this paper — it is simply the GK section's place, and that is a different job with a different method. XE carries GK papers for exactly that reason. What we are saying is narrower and firmer: carrying that knowledge into the legal reasoning section is a liability, and nobody preparing you is likely to tell you so, because the thing they are selling you is the knowledge.
XE's legal reasoning passages are built to expose that reflex, deliberately and repeatedly. Each passage states a principle accurately but incompletely, and the facts are then placed precisely where the omitted real-world exception would have sat. Passages are varied by logical structure rather than by branch of law — conjunctive and disjunctive conditions, necessary versus sufficient, rule and exception, provisos, conflicting principles with a priority rule, presumptions and burden — because the structure is what you are actually being tested on.
Answer from the four corners of the passage and you are right. Answer from what you happen to know about defamation, or privacy, or negligence, and you are not. You find that out on a mock paper in your own room, rather than in an examination hall in December.
Traps are not an accident of one section. They are set deliberately, in all of them.
A wrong option on a well-set paper is not merely wrong. It is engineered — built to be the answer you reach for when you have parsed nine-tenths of the question and started solving. Every section has its own family of these, and they recur, year after year, because they work.
Our job is to familiarise you with them until you can see them coming. That is the whole product. You are not being taught new material here. You are being stopped from losing marks you already know how to earn — so that what you score reflects what you are actually capable of, instead of falling short of it.

You begin computing before you have finished parsing the stem, and take the percentage of the wrong denominator. The arithmetic is flawless. The base is not. A single italicised word mid-sentence is often the whole trap.
A condition the argument requires is treated as a condition that guarantees, or a correlation is quietly upgraded to a cause.
The option states something the passage strongly suggests but never actually says, and is chosen because it feels true rather than because it is supported.
Right event, wrong year. Right institution, wrong office. Options built one degree away from the fact you half-remember.
Every wrong option in an XE paper carries a trap code, fixed to that option rather than to the question. When you get it wrong, the explanation names the trap you took, not merely the answer you missed.
Exposure is then counted alongside errors. You are shown how often you have met a given trap and how often you fell for it — because taking the bait six times out of nine is a habit, and taking it once out of nine is a bad morning. Nothing is reported to you as a habit until it has appeared often enough, across enough separate papers, to actually be one. We would rather tell you nothing than tell you something that is not there.
